guide to using the Club Website
The purpose of this page is to provide a guide for newcomers to the website. Let’s start off with defining a few terms that might make things a bit easier for you.
Logging on – This refers to getting access to the website from your computer or tablet. The easiest way of doing this is to use the browser your computer came with and that you're familiar with. You can do this by using the Safari (Apple) or Explorer (Microsoft). I’ll explain more about this later on.
Click on – I tend to use this term a lot throughout the website. All it means is how you can get to the things that you want access to. It maybe another page on the website, a document located somewhere else or sending an email response to someone. All it means is that you will need to use your mouse to hover over the link and clicking your mouse button. If you use a tablet then just tap the link with your finger. When you’ve clicked (tapped) on the link you’ll be taken automatically to the destination. The destination might be another website, a demonstrator’s Facebook channel, an email or to another page on our website.
That’s the two things that you really need to understand about getting the best out of the website. We can now move on to how it all works.
LOGGING ON
The easiest method is to access the website is from your browser using Google. You’ll need to click on your browser application, Safari (Apple) or Explorer (Microsoft). This should bring up a screen that will allow you to type in www.google.org.uk in the box at the top of the image shown below or type North Lincolnshire Woodturning Association in the box under the word Google. Just press the Return Key to make it work.
Either of these methods should bring up another screen that will take you to our website. A further alternative method would be to access the website by clicking on the link www.nlwa.org.uk. Why not give it a try now? If you use Google on regular basis you will wafted straight into our website like magic!
What you should now see is the Home Page of our website has shown.
You will see all the pages that make up our website listed in the box. You’ll notice that Hello and Welcome has a box around it and this indicates the page that you are on. You can now scroll down the page to see more of the content on it.
The purpose of this page is to provide newcomers with an introduction to the Club and what we are about.
If you want to move to another page, then click (tap) on the name of page you want to go to. Try moving to the Members Area page by clicking (tapping) on it. Now try scrolling down the page until you get to the AWGB section has shown.
There’s not much to see you may think but try clicking (tapping) on the link https://www.awgb.co.uk and you will be magically be propelled straight in to the AWGB website. These links save a lot of space, time and effort. In future, members will be able to use links to get into useful websites such as Turners Retreat, Axminster Tools or Record Power simply by clicking on a link
WATCHING A VIDEO
Whilst we’ve received some videos from members to publish on the website, most are downloaded from YouTube. Though I do try and eliminate all those annoying adverts with a handy program, some defy my attempts to eradicate them because of the format that they’ve been sent in. My apologies for that!
Lets have a look at a video. Try moving to the YouTube Demonstrations page by clicking on the page name. Having got there, just scroll down to Phil Greenwoods section. You should see the screen opposite.
Try clicking on the big red Play button in the middle of the first video. That should have got the video playing for you. Wouldn’t it be better if you could view it full screen? Easy! Just click on the Play button again and it will start playing full screen for you.
If this guide has been useful to you then please let me know at info@nlwa.org.uk.
I'll be delighted to hear from you (and that's another link for you to try!)
RESPONSE FORMS
I’ve used the survey forms throughout the website as a means of communicating with all members. I try and predict the sort of content to put on the site that might appeal to you all. It’s very difficult to succeed at this unless I know what you want to see. I hadn’t taken onboard the fact that some members are mystified about how to fill these forms in, rather than the fact that they cannot be bothered to do it! Here are a few hints on replying on these forms.
Firstly, click on the Members Area page (remember the password Woody!). Now scroll down to Your Website Survey form. You should be seeing the form displayed opposite. Now click on the box below where it says Your Name and type in your name. Then click on Membership Number box and type in your number. Do the same thing with your email address[1] box.
Now just move to the round buttons and click on whether you like or dislike the format of the website. You should see that your selection is now selected. Now just move along the row to the next question (Does the website provide you etc). Now you can move down to the next row and select your preferences in the same way. If you have any other views or comments then type them into the large final box. When you are happy with all your entries just click on Click here to send and the form will be sent to my Inbox. Please do try this because I’d be delighted to hear from you and I’m sure that all your friends in the Club would be interested as well.
[1] If you are reading this guide from the website but haven’t received it from me by email it means that we may be missing your current email address. If this is the case, could you please complete the form and send it to me? We can then keep in contact with you so that you get important information about such things as when we will be reopening.
